Bilbao Athletic player Ilyas El Arbaoui reports racist insult

Ilyas El Arbaoui, a Bilbao Athletic left-back of Moroccan origin, reported receiving a racist insult during a match against Unionistas in Salamanca. According to the official match report, El Arbaoui informed the referee in the 91st minute that local player Álvaro Gómez had called him a “moro de mierda”.

The referee activated the anti-racism protocol, which included an announcement over the stadium's public address system. However, the officiating crew noted in the report that none of the referees directly heard the specific slur used.

The incident occurred during stoppage time of a match that ended in a 2-1 defeat for Bilbao Athletic. El Arbaoui, an 18-year-old who has represented Morocco at the U-17 and U-20 international levels, had been a regular presence in the Lezama academy since 2009.
