Bilbao authorities urge civic responsibility during local festivals

The Bilbao City Council has launched a civic campaign titled ‘No dejes rastro, deja huella’ (Leave no trace, leave a mark) to combat waste during local festivities. The initiative specifically targets the practice of throwing disposable cups, known locally as ‘katxi’, and encourages citizens to use waste bins and reusable alternatives to maintain urban cleanliness.

Simultaneously, Mayor Juan Mari Aburto has called for citizen cooperation to curb unauthorized street food sales during the Aste Nagusia celebrations. Following a police operation that seized over 90 kilograms of unregulated food products, Aburto noted that while municipal police are active, it is impossible to monitor every corner. He urged the public to stop purchasing from these unauthorized stalls, which lack sanitary controls, stating, ‘if we stop buying, they will stop being there’.
