Bilbao begins renovation of Betolaza stairs
The Bilbao City Council has begun urban renovation works on the Betolaza stairs to improve pedestrian mobility, safety, and accessibility for local residents. The project, which started in August, is expected to continue for approximately three months.
The intervention focuses on the section between portals 114 and 127. Key improvements include repairing cracks and depressions, installing new printed mortar paving, and replacing existing railings and handrails with stainless steel elements that meet modern safety standards.
Additionally, the project includes the construction of a new sidewalk at the bottom of the stairs near the neighborhood road. This new pedestrian space will feature ‘Bilbao’ type tiles and tactile paving to enhance visibility and safety for those accessing the stairs from the street.
