Băile Herculane faces infrastructure decay despite rising foreign interest

Băile Herculane, one of Romania’s oldest thermal spa resorts, is experiencing a divergence between growing foreign interest and declining local infrastructure. While Serbian tourists are increasingly drawn to the destination due to its accessible prices, therapeutic thermal waters, and scenic views in the Cerna Valley, the resort faces a critical lack of public investment.

Historically significant, the resort dates back to the Roman Empire and saw a period of prestige during the Austro-Hungarian era, hosting figures such as Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. However, current conditions in areas like Cădițe are described as deplorable, with visitors reporting a lack of basic facilities such as changing rooms and toilets, alongside hygiene issues.

Experts estimate that approximately 200 million euros are required to revitalize the resort, including 50 million euros specifically for the rehabilitation of Băile Neptun. Critics point to a disparity in budget priorities, noting that significant state funds have been allocated to sports infrastructure, such as football arenas, while the spa's modernization remains largely unfunded.
