Bilecik begins chestnut pumpkin harvest

The harvest season for chestnut pumpkins has commenced in Kızıldamlar village, located in the Bilecik province of Turkey. Grown across approximately 700 decares of land, these pumpkins are notable for their long shelf life of about one year and their ability to reach weights exceeding 40 kilograms.

Producers benefit from the Kızıldamlar Dam Pond, constructed in 2006, which provides ample water for the crops. The cultivation process begins with planting in late April or early May, followed by weeding, irrigation, and fertilization throughout the summer. Once harvested in late October, the pumpkins are left in the fields for 10 to 15 days, turned upside down to dry in the sun and reduce moisture.

Local producer Mehmet Kösem noted that the altitude of the region contributes to the durability and flavor of the produce. The pumpkins are used for various culinary purposes, including desserts, soups, and Turkish delight. While average yields per decare range between 2 and 4 tons, individual pumpkins typically weigh between 15 and 20 kilograms, though some reach up to 40 kilograms.
