Bilim Ümraniye captures ISS transit in front of the Sun

The Bilim Ümraniye science team successfully captured the transit of the International Space Station (ISS) in front of the Sun from Beykoz, Istanbul. The event, which occurred around 14:45, was recorded using a specialized solar telescope equipped with specific filters.

Astronomer Mehmet Yüksek noted the extreme difficulty of the observation, as the ISS travels at approximately 28,000 kilometers per hour, causing the transit to last only about half a second. By capturing 30 frames per second, the team secured 15 images of the station, which they intend to combine into a single high-resolution photograph.

This achievement marks the first time a science center in Turkey has directly observed and recorded an ISS solar transit. The team highlighted the significance of the ISS, noting it is the site where Turkey’s first astronaut, Alper Gezeravcı, conducted 13 scientific experiments during his mission. The captured data will be used for educational purposes and shared with students and amateur astronomers.
