Bill and Tom Kaulitz recall extreme hatred in hometown

Musicians Bill and Tom Kaulitz have spoken about the extreme hatred and violence they experienced growing up in their hometown of Loitsche, near Magdeburg. During an appearance on the ZDF program ‘Aspekte’, the Tokio Hotel brothers reflected on their rebellious youth, noting that their appearance and behavior drew significant hostility from locals.

Bill Kaulitz described the environment as one of “extreme, extreme hate,” explaining that their distinct styles—including Tom’s dreadlocks and anti-Nazi clothing, and Bill’s makeup and black hair—caused local residents to react with aggression. The brothers recalled that their family had to take precautions, such as their stepfather accompanying them with a dog and a baseball bat to ensure their safety.

Tom Kaulitz compared their time in the village to being in a “prison,” stating that they always felt a desperate need to leave. The brothers indicated they would rather never make music again than return to live in their former hometown.
