Bill Belichick recalls Lawrence Taylor's immediate impact with the New York Giants

Bill Belichick has recalled the immediate impact of rookie Lawrence Taylor during a 1981 New York Giants training camp scrimmage. Initially, head coach Ray Perkins, defensive coordinator Bill Parcells, and linebackers coach Belichick intended to introduce the North Carolina alumnus slowly to help him learn passing game coverage.

However, after watching Taylor dominate blockers and quarterbacks during a scrimmage, the coaching staff reached a consensus to play him immediately. Belichick noted that Taylor was ‘un-blockable’ and ready for full involvement. To maximize Taylor's impact, Parcells transitioned the team's defense from a traditional 4-3 scheme to a 3-4 alignment.

During his career, Taylor earned the nickname ‘Superman’ and recorded 142 sacks, winning three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards and two Super Bowls. Belichick described Taylor as an instinctive competitor who could read plays based on the fear of his opponents.
