Bill Belichick announces son Steve Belichick on medical leave

North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick told reporters that his son and defensive coordinator, Steve Belichick, has been placed on indefinite medical leave during the team's second week of preseason camp. No timeline for his return was given; Belichick said the staff hopes to have him back “as soon as possible.” The defensive coaches will operate collectively while Steve is absent. UNC opens its 2026 season on Aug. 29 against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. The announcement came as the university also placed general manager Michael Lombardi on paid administrative leave amid an ongoing investigation.
