Bill Cosby memes shift from comedy to dark commentary amid assault allegations
The internet phenomenon known as the ‘Bill Cosby meme’ evolved from lighthearted jokes about the comedian’s catchphrases and Coogi sweaters into dark commentary following widespread sexual assault allegations. The shift in tone accelerated in late 2014 after Cosby’s official Twitter account invited users to use the hashtag #CosbyMeme; the tag was quickly hijacked by users creating image macros referencing accusations of drugging and assault.
These allegations gained significant momentum following a stand-up set by comedian Hannibal Buress and were further highlighted by a New York Magazine cover featuring 35 accusers. The legal proceedings culminated in Cosby’s 2018 conviction for the drugging and assault of Andrea Constand, a case often cited as a precursor to the #MeToo movement. The digital discourse surrounding Cosby remains characterized by the juxtaposition of his wholesome sitcom-era persona with the serious nature of the criminal allegations.
