Bill Gates highlights India's AI potential as medical AI advances
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has highlighted India's potential to demonstrate how artificial intelligence can be leveraged for rapid social and developmental benefits. During a discussion, Gates noted that AI is fundamentally different from previous technological revolutions like the personal computer or the internet, warning that society may not be fully prepared for the speed and scale of its impact. He suggested that if slowing the pace of AI development could allow society more time to prepare for these shifts, it should be considered, citing cybersecurity as an immediate risk.
In the medical sector, AI is being deployed to combat cancer. The Biochemistry Department of AIIMS Delhi, in collaboration with C-DAC Pune, has developed ‘I-Oncology.ai’, an AI-based digital platform designed to assist clinicians in the early detection, prevention, and treatment of cancers, specifically focusing on breast and ovarian cancer. The model has been featured in a paper published in the BRICS Health Journal and is currently in the pilot-clinical stage after successful patient trials.
