Bill Gates: Measles eradication goal abandoned due to vaccine hesitancy

Bill Gates has announced that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has removed the eradication of measles from its list of primary goals. This decision is driven by rising vaccine hesitancy in wealthy nations, including the United States and parts of Europe, where vaccination rates have fallen.

Measles is one of the world's most contagious diseases. Before vaccines were introduced in the 1960s, the virus killed approximately 2 million children annually. Today, roughly 100,000 children die each year, primarily in regions facing conflict or logistical barriers to immunization. The World Health Organization emphasizes that vaccination coverage must remain above 95% to prevent outbreaks.

Gates noted that while skepticism has increased in developed countries—partially linked to figures like U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—it has not yet spread to lower-income countries. However, he expressed concern that the trend in the U.S. could become a global phenomenon, which would be tragic for global public health efforts.
