Bill Gates proposes taxing robots to protect social security

Bill Gates has proposed that robots and artificial intelligence systems should be subject to taxes similar to human workers to prevent significant gaps in social security funding. During an interview with Ezra Klein, the Microsoft co-founder argued that as automation replaces human labor, it could lead to massive job losses and a decrease in government tax revenue.

In the United States, the FICA tax—which funds Social Security and Medicare—is paid by both employees and employers. Gates suggests defining a unit of labor and applying the same tax rate regardless of whether that unit is performed by a human or a robot. He noted that current tax structures may inadvertently encourage companies to choose automation over human employees because robots can be written off as business expenses, whereas human payroll incurs specific taxes.

By taxing robot labor, Gates believes a portion of the savings companies gain from automation could be redirected to the public sector to support social safety nets and worker retraining programs.
