Bill Gates sets 2045 closure for foundation with $200 billion spending plan
Bill Gates has announced that the Gates Foundation will officially close on December 31, 2045. This decision accelerates the original timeline, which had planned for the organization to dissolve 20 years after his death. To fund this accelerated wind-down, Gates intends to progressively contribute nearly his entire personal fortune, aiming to spend more than $200 billion over the foundation's final two decades.
A significant portion of this funding will target artificial intelligence. The foundation has committed $1 billion over the next two years to AI projects, distributed among healthcare ($400 million), agriculture ($100 million), and education ($400 million).
The educational investment focuses on tools to assist teachers in identifying student comprehension gaps and developing personalized tutoring systems. While Gates views AI as a potential equalizer, the initiative has sparked debate regarding privacy, the role of private corporations in public education, and the necessity of rigorous testing for such technologies.
