Bill Gates warns of 20-year period of AI-driven social and economic upheaval

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has characterized the rise of artificial intelligence as an ‘evolutionary event’ comparable to the transition from apes to humans. In recent interviews, including on the Decoder podcast, Gates warned that the next two decades could be one of the most turbulent periods in human history as society navigates a transition toward an AI-driven economy.

Gates anticipates that while AI will eventually create a state of ‘true abundance,’ the interim period will be marked by significant winners and losers. He expects widespread disruption in the labor market, noting that white-collar roles such as accounting, customer service, and telesales are at high risk due to AI’s ability to perform tasks more accurately and cheaply. Furthermore, the development of humanoid robots is expected to impact physical labor, including construction, agriculture, and even surgery.

To mitigate these risks, Gates has called for stronger government oversight and the implementation of technical safeguards against biological and cyber threats. He suggested that certain domains, such as the arts, sports, cooking, and childcare, should remain human-centric. He also emphasized the need for policymakers to prepare for the economic shifts by investing in retraining programs and social safety nets to support displaced workers.
