Bill Gates warns of AI risks and calls for mandatory regulation
Bill Gates has issued a warning regarding the profound risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence, stating that the technology possesses the potential to trigger events that could lead to the deaths of one billion people. Speaking to NBC News on the program ‘Meet the Press’, the Microsoft co-founder emphasized that a simple ‘emergency kill switch’ would be insufficient to manage these risks, noting that current AI systems are not yet at a stage where they could autonomously prevent being shut down.
Gates argued that the most immediate threat is not AI becoming sentient or losing control on its own, but rather the technology being exploited by malicious actors to conduct cyberattacks, biological threats, or other large-scale harmful activities. He expressed skepticism toward corporate self-regulation, suggesting that relying solely on companies to set their own safety rules is inadequate.
To mitigate these dangers, Gates called for mandatory safety protocols, monitoring mechanisms, and public oversight. He urged politicians and law enforcement agencies to become directly involved in discussions regarding AI security and to establish legal frameworks to ensure the technology is developed and used safely.
