Bill Maher addresses immigration values and Gen Z economic status

Comedian Bill Maher has sparked debate through recent monologues on his HBO program, Real Time, addressing both cultural assimilation and the economic status of younger generations.

Regarding immigration, Maher argued that while immigrants are welcome to maintain their traditions, they must adopt fundamental American and Western values, such as women’s equality, free speech, and the separation of religion and state. He stated, “If you want the American dream, you have to take the American values,” emphasizing that certain societal foundations are non-negotiable.

In a separate discussion, Maher addressed the economic challenges facing Gen Z. He contended that the perceived affordability crisis is often overstated, citing data that suggests wages have outpaced food inflation over the last decade. He further argued that young adults are accumulating more wealth than previously thought, using the example of high food costs being a result of delivery fees rather than base grocery prices. While Federal Reserve data shows significant wealth gains for younger households in recent years, critics note that high housing costs and student debt continue to impact many in this demographic.
