Bill Maher argues immigrants must adopt American values

During an episode of HBO’s ‘Real Time,’ comedian Bill Maher argued that immigrants to the United States must assimilate into Western civilization and adopt core American principles. Maher stated that while the country welcomes diverse cultures, religions, and languages, certain values—including free speech, women’s equality, and LGBTQ+ rights—are ‘not negotiable.’

Maher characterized these principles as liberal democratic values rather than ‘white values.’ He criticized both major political parties for taking extreme approaches to immigration, describing the Biden administration’s approach as ‘open doors’ and the Trump administration’s as ‘broken windows.’

He expressed concern that the traditional ‘melting pot’ concept is being rejected by some newcomers who expect the host country to adapt to them instead. Maher advocated for a return to a policy of attracting talented, hard-working immigrants and integrating them into American society.
