Bill Oliver reads AI chatbot text aloud in New Brunswick legislature

Progressive Conservative MLA Bill Oliver, representing the Kings Centre district in New Brunswick, delivered a floor speech on a matter concerning the Office of the New Brunswick Advocate. Partway through, he read a line that was an AI chatbot’s formatting note rather than his prepared remarks, saying, "Here's a more natural, flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech."

Video of the slip was posted online and quickly spread on Reddit, Threads and other platforms. Canadian media outlets including the CBC, Toronto Star, 1News and Ars Technica reported on the episode, highlighting concerns about politicians relying on generative‑AI tools without thorough review and noting the absence of formal parliamentary rules governing the recitation of AI‑generated text.
