Bill Rasmussen, ESPN co-founder, dies at 93
Bill Rasmussen, the co-founder and first president of ESPN, has died at the age of 93 at his home in Florida. His death was attributed to complications from Parkinson’s disease, a condition he had lived with since 2014.
Rasmussen, along with his son Scott, revolutionized the media landscape by conceiving the idea of a 24-hour cable network dedicated exclusively to sports. The project, originally intended to cover Connecticut sports, expanded into a national phenomenon following the acquisition of satellite transponder space. ESPN officially launched on September 7, 1979, with its flagship program, ‘SportsCenter.’
Despite his foundational role, Rasmussen and his son were forced out of the company after approximately one year when majority shareholder Getty Oil took control. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro honored his legacy, describing him as a ‘visionary and an innovator’ whose entrepreneurial spirit remains central to the company's culture. Other industry figures, including veteran anchor Chris Berman, also paid tribute to his lasting impact on sports broadcasting.
