Bill Simmons doubts NBA markets in New Orleans and Portland

Bill Simmons said there is no clear evidence that New Orleans can sustain a successful NBA franchise. He noted the Pelicans' modest playoff record, the city's past experience with the Jazz (1974‑79) and the temporary relocation after Hurricane Katrina, and concluded the market has never “worked” for the league.

Simmons also warned that Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon may be using the threat of relocation as leverage, suggesting a move could be cheaper than purchasing an expansion team. He quoted Dundon’s alleged concern about the $7‑8 billion expansion cost versus a $4.25 billion purchase, while reminding that any relocation would still require approval from the other NBA owners.
