Bill Simmons faces regulatory review over proxy betting admissions
Media personality Bill Simmons is under investigation by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission following admissions made on ‘The Bill Simmons Podcast’. Simmons detailed an arrangement where his daughter’s boyfriend placed FanDuel wagers on his behalf in Massachusetts while Simmons was located in Los Angeles, where online sports betting is not legal.
Simmons described sending authentication codes to the individual to facilitate the bets. Massachusetts regulations prohibit proxy wagering, and FanDuel’s terms of service also forbid account sharing. A spokesperson for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission confirmed that staff are currently reviewing the matter. FanDuel has since voided the wagers and stated it took action in accordance with regulations and its own terms.
Simmons addressed the situation in a subsequent episode, stating he was unaware of the proxy betting rules and has since ‘learned my lesson’. The incident follows recent criticism regarding Simmons’ integration of artificial intelligence into his media content.
