Bill Swearingen develops patterns to evade license plate cameras

Bill Swearingen has developed noRecognition, a tool designed to evade automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras using computer-generated patterns. The method involves applying a specific pattern to a vehicle that disrupts the initial vehicle detection phase of the software. While the license plate remains visible to the human eye, the software fails to recognize a vehicle is present, preventing it from attempting to read the plate.

Swearingen, a co-founder of the SecKC security meetup, utilized a fuzzer to test over 31 million patterns against various camera models. The project was motivated by documented instances of unjust arrests linked to surveillance technology. In a recent test in Las Vegas, a Toyota Yaris equipped with such a pattern successfully passed a Flock camera without being logged by the detection software.
