Bill Swearingen develops vehicle wraps to bypass AI surveillance

Hacker Bill Swearingen has developed a project called noRecognition, which utilizes specialized vehicle wraps to make cars ‘invisible’ to AI-powered surveillance cameras. During a demonstration in Las Vegas, a vehicle covered in a specific geometric pattern was successfully ignored by Flock Safety surveillance software, which failed to detect the presence of a vehicle in the frame.

The technology works by applying a physical adversarial pattern—an abstract design intended to disrupt automated vision models. Rather than obscuring license plates, which remain visible and compliant with regulations, the pattern is designed to prevent the algorithm from identifying the object as a vehicle in the first place. Swearingen utilized an iterative testing process, conducting over 31 million tests to refine patterns that could bypass a wide range of object detection algorithms.
