Billa announces major price reductions on 3,000 products
Austrian supermarket chain Billa has announced its most extensive price reduction initiative to date, aiming to match the pricing levels of discount retailers. Starting September 24, the company will permanently lower prices on approximately 3,000 products under a new label called ‘Immer Clever Preis’.
The initiative is a response to changing consumer behavior, with the company noting that 77 percent of consumers regularly compare prices before purchasing. The price cuts will apply to a mix of goods: 40 percent are established brand-name products, 30 percent belong to the ‘clever’ private label, and the remaining 30 percent consist of other Billa brands such as ‘Ja! Natürlich’, ‘Vegavita’, or ‘Immer gut’. Affected items include daily essentials like fruit, vegetables, bread, meat, and household goods.
To fund this multi-million euro investment, CEO Erich Szuchy stated that the company board has been reduced from five members to three. Szuchy described the move as the ‘largest price offensive in our history’, intended to provide relief to households facing difficult economic conditions.
