Billa changes discount system in Austria
The Austrian supermarket chain Billa is implementing significant changes to its discount system. The traditional 25 percent discount stickers, which customers could peel and reuse, are being replaced by paper markers that must be detached from a perforation and handed in at the checkout.
Under the new system, which begins on September 24, 2026, the discount will be automatically applied to the most expensive eligible product in a customer's basket. This replaces the previous method where customers could choose which specific item to apply the sticker to. Billa has also announced a major price offensive, offering up to 3,000 items at prices matching leading discounters.
The shift has sparked debate regarding price transparency and consumer habits. While some view the automatic application as a convenience, others criticize the inability to reuse stickers and the complexity of the discount rules. Critics also suggest that constant promotional cycles can obscure actual product costs and influence consumers to spend more than intended.
