Billie Jean King criticizes Roger Federer over tennis equality

Tennis icon Billie Jean King has criticized Roger Federer for not being a more active advocate for gender equality and equal prize money in the sport. In an interview with Racquet magazine, the WTA founder expressed frustration that the 20-time Grand Slam champion has not used his significant influence to push for systemic changes.

King specifically noted Federer’s personal life as a reason for him to champion the cause, stating, “I wish he would fight for equality more because I keep saying, ‘You have two boys and two girls! You have equality in your household!’” She suggested that Federer may be hesitant to “rock the boat” or challenge the established status quo.

Federer has previously addressed the issue of prize money disparities. During the 2016 Miami Open, he stated he supported the principle of equality but noted that the history and structure of individual tournaments often complicate the implementation of equal pay. He has maintained that his own efforts to increase prize money at the Grand Slam level have historically benefited female players as well.
