BillionToOne reports high sensitivity in prenatal genetic screening study

BillionToOne, Inc. has released results from a multi-site prospective study evaluating its Unity Fetal Risk Screen. The study, conducted across nine U.S. institutions, assessed 2,212 pregnant carriers to determine fetal risk for conditions including cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and alpha- and beta-hemoglobinopathies.

The research focused on general-risk pregnancies where the partner's carrier status was unknown. The Unity Fetal Risk Screen demonstrated 94.4% sensitivity, 99.5% specificity, and a negative predictive value exceeding 99.9%.

Unlike traditional carrier screening, which often requires partner testing to determine risk, this cell-free DNA (cfDNA) approach assesses fetal risk directly from maternal blood. This method aims to address logistical and financial barriers associated with incomplete partner follow-up in routine prenatal care.
