Billy Corgan declares Christian faith and intent to discuss God in music

Billy Corgan, the frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins, has publicly declared his Christian faith, stating that he believes in Jesus as his Lord and Savior. During a September 2026 conversation on the podcast ‘The Magnificent Others’ with Michael Sweet of the band Stryper, Corgan discussed his decision to be open about his religious convictions in his music.

Corgan, who was raised Catholic but left the church at age eight, described God as the ‘third rail of rock and roll,’ noting the commercial and social risks artists face when discussing faith openly. He expressed that concealing a defining part of his identity would be a contradiction when asking fans to believe in him as an artist.
