Billy Corgan defends friendship with Marilyn Manson

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has defended his nearly 30-year friendship with Marilyn Manson (Brian Warner) following various allegations of sexual misconduct and domestic violence. Speaking on The New York Times ‘Popcast’, Corgan stated that he does not believe Manson is guilty of the charges, citing his own knowledge of “personal things behind the scenes” and the fact that the Los Angeles District Attorney declined to pursue criminal charges.

In January 2025, District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that after a four-year investigation, his office would not bring charges because the statute of limitations had expired on domestic violence claims and prosecutors could not prove sexual assault charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Corgan emphasized that while he remains critical and holds personal opinions, he believes in standing by friends and rejects external pressure to dictate his social associations.

The two musicians share a familial connection, as Manson’s wife, Lindsay Usich, is the twin sister of Ashley Usich, who is married to Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha.
