Billy Elliot wins big at the 16th Hugo Awards

The 16th edition of the Hugo Awards celebrated Argentine musical theater at the Teatro Coliseo. The ceremony, broadcast by TV Pública, honored productions released between August 1, 2025, and July 2026 across 43 categories.

Billy Elliot emerged as the night's biggest winner, securing eight awards including Best Musical. Other major winners included Hairspray, which earned seven awards, and Company, which received four. Specific honors included Gaby Goldman winning Best Musical Direction for Billy Elliot, and Vanesa García Millán receiving the award for Best Choreography for Hairspray.

The event also featured the Hugo Federales, recognizing productions from various regions including Córdoba, Mendoza, and Rosario. The ceremony included a tribute to the 100th anniversary of musical theater in the country and honored veteran playwright Gustavo “Tweety” Monje for his career.
