Billy Slater resigns as Queensland State of Origin mentor

Billy Slater has resigned from his role as the Queensland Maroons State of Origin mentor, a decision that has caused significant disruption within the NRL. Reports of his resignation reached Queensland players via online news before official announcements were made.

Melbourne Storm CEO Justin Rodski addressed speculation that Slater’s resignation was a move to join the Storm in a full-time head coaching capacity to eventually succeed Craig Bellamy. Rodski stated it is too early to speculate on the club’s coaching structure for 2028, noting that the club is currently focused on the future of Craig Bellamy. Slater will continue his current role as a part-time specialist coach at the Storm through next season.

Queensland officials are beginning a search for a replacement mentor. Potential candidates being considered include Cameron Smith, Matt Ballin, Ben Te’o, and Anthony Seibold.
