Binance and Coinbase expand infrastructure for AI agent finance

Major cryptocurrency exchanges Binance and Coinbase are expanding their infrastructure to support ‘agentic finance,’ a sector focused on enabling AI agents to perform financial transactions with minimal human intervention.

Binance has introduced Agent OS, a developer platform designed to connect AI applications to its trading, market data, and payment capabilities. The platform utilizes the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to allow tools like ChatGPT and Claude to interact with Binance’s financial infrastructure. Developers can configure specific permissions and limits, and assign agents to dedicated subaccounts to manage funds and trading activity.

Coinbase is similarly advancing its ‘AiFi’ vision by providing AI agents with access to wallets and payment networks. Through its ‘Coinbase for Agents’ product, the exchange uses the Model Context Protocol to allow agents to trade and make payments within user-defined limits. Additionally, Coinbase’s x402 protocol enables agents to pay for digital services, such as APIs and computing power, using USDC stablecoins. The company reported that over 97% of agentic transactions in the second quarter utilized the x402 protocol.
