Binance calls for clearer crypto regulations and financial literacy in Africa

Binance is calling for clearer and more coordinated cryptocurrency regulations across Africa to support blockchain innovation while protecting consumers. Larry Cooke, Binance’s Africa spokesperson, noted that current regulatory frameworks vary significantly by country. For instance, South Africa requires licensing, Ghana utilizes a regulatory sandbox for new products, and Kenya has established specific rules for virtual asset providers.

Cooke argued that while countries do not need identical rules, better coordination among regulators could facilitate easier cross-border operations. He emphasized that blockchain technology, including stablecoins, could improve the speed and cost of cross-border payments, potentially working alongside existing mobile money and banking systems.

In addition to regulation, Binance is advocating for increased financial literacy. The company suggests that schools should teach the fundamentals of money to prepare the continent's youth for a financial system increasingly shaped by digital assets. This push comes as sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the fastest-growing crypto markets, with significant transaction volumes driven by everyday users utilizing digital assets for cross-border payments and as a hedge against currency volatility.
