Binance faces possible EU licence rejection in Greece as MiCA deadline nears

Greek regulator the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) is expected to reject Binance’s application for a MiCA licence, a decision that could take effect on 1 July 2026. Without a licence in one EU member state, Binance would lose its passport to operate across the 27‑nation bloc.

Binance says its application was deemed compliant by the HCMC and reviewed by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), and the exchange is working with regulators to secure the authorisation. Some reports link the anticipated rejection to pressure from European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, though these claims remain unverified.

With Greece potentially closing the door, Binance is looking to France as a “last resort” to retain a foothold in the EU market. The exchange warned that any delay or denial could reduce competition, push activity outside the EU and affect services such as SEPA transfers, stable‑coin trading and advanced derivatives for European users. It pledged to keep users informed and minimise disruption before the 30 June deadline.
