Binance founder warns of AI-driven phishing and market volatility
Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, has issued a warning regarding the rise of AI-enabled phishing and social engineering attacks in the cryptocurrency sector. Zhao noted that while fears of AI breaking Bitcoin’s core encryption are often exaggerated, the real danger lies in cybercriminals using AI to exploit personal data leaks. By leveraging leaked information, attackers can create highly convincing fake support teams and personalized messages to trick users into revealing recovery phrases.
These warnings follow recent security incidents involving hardware wallets, including investigations by Ledger into thefts linked to vendor CryptoBilis in Southeast Asia, with estimated losses between $93 million and $95 million.
Simultaneously, Bitcoin has experienced significant market volatility. Google Trends data shows a surge in searches for the phrase ‘Bitcoin is dead’, reaching levels not seen since the FTX collapse in 2022. Despite recent price fluctuations and massive liquidations triggered by geopolitical tensions, Zhao suggested that periods of extreme negative sentiment have historically represented buying opportunities.
