Binance invests $100 million in Circle to expand USDC distribution

Binance has invested $100 million in Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, and entered into a new five-year commercial agreement to promote and integrate USDC across its global platform. Through a private placement, Binance acquired approximately 1.237 million Class A shares at $80.84 per share, representing a roughly 5% discount to the market price. Under the terms of the deal, Binance will promote USDC usage, particularly in emerging markets, while Circle will pay monthly incentives to Binance based on the USDC holdings within the exchange’s infrastructure.

The partnership has already demonstrated significant impact on trading activity. Since the initial collaboration began in late 2024, USDC-quoted spot markets on Binance have increased from 140 to 329. Monthly USDC trading volume on the platform has risen from a range of $20 billion–$40 billion to consistently exceeding $80 billion.

Despite this growth, USDC remains behind the market leader, Tether’s USDT, which holds a market capitalization of approximately $140 billion compared to USDC’s $74 billion. Analysts note that while the Binance distribution network provides a major boost for USDC, challenging USDT’s dominance will require overcoming its established liquidity, deep trading pairs, and widespread payment networks.
