German Sparkassen and Volksbanken to Offer Crypto Trading to Millions
Germany’s two largest retail banking networks, the Sparkassen savings banks and the Volksbanken cooperative banks, are integrating cryptocurrency trading into their mobile banking apps. The service will initially include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Cardano and is being built on platforms such as DZ Bank’s “meinKrypto” and a forthcoming DekaBank solution. A BaFin licence was granted under the EU Markets in Crypto‑Assets (MiCA) framework, which became fully effective at the end of 2024, allowing the banks to provide regulated custody and settlement via Boerse Stuttgart Digital.
Rollout is phased: the first live pilot began in May 2026 with VR‑Bank Würzburg, and hundreds of regional banks are expected to follow throughout 2026. Up to 50 million Sparkassen customers and about 30 million Volksbanken clients – roughly 80 million retail accounts in a nation of 84 million people – could gain direct access to crypto trading without opening separate exchange accounts.
Bank officials stress that the offering is for self‑directed investors and carry warnings that digital assets are highly speculative and can result in total loss. Critics, including academics, caution that trusted bank branding may lead customers to underestimate these risks. The move aims to retain younger, tech‑savvy clients and compete with specialist crypto platforms while keeping trading inside the regulated banking environment.
