Gen Z investment trends show shift toward ETFs and rising sports betting

Gen Z investors are exhibiting distinct financial behaviors, characterized by a shift toward ETFs and a growing tension between traditional investing and gambling. According to Binance Research, Gen Z's share of new users in products linked to traditional finance rose from 41% in January 2026 to 47% in July 2026, contributing approximately $80 billion in trading volume. Contrary to perceptions of high-risk behavior, this group shows lower interest in leveraged products and trades less frequently than the general population.

However, a significant portion of young investors is diverting funds from long-term wealth building toward speculative activities. A Betterment survey indicates that more than half of Gen Z investors have moved money intended for investments into sports betting, with 26% considering it an ongoing part of their financial plans. This trend is particularly pronounced compared to older generations, such as Millennials (14%) and Baby Boomers (1%).

In India, the National Stock Exchange reports a surge in young investors, with those aged 30 or less increasing from under 24% in 2020 to over 38% by May 2026. While many pursue the 'Financial Independence, Retire Early' (FIRE) movement, experts warn that social media influencers often oversimplify the rigorous planning and high savings rates required to achieve early retirement.
