Bingham Canyon Mine is one of the world's deepest open-pit mines
The Bingham Canyon Mine, located in Utah near Salt Lake City, stands as one of the world's deepest open-pit mines. The massive excavation reaches depths of approximately 1,200 meters, creating a vast amphitheater of rock terraces.
Copper has been mined at this site since the beginning of the 20th century. The scale of the operation is immense; the pit is deep enough to contain the Empire State Building with hundreds of meters of space still remaining above it. The site features a complex system of engineered terraces designed to access ore deep within the Earth's crust, where heavy mining trucks weighing hundreds of tons operate across the landscape.
