Binghamton University researchers develop electricity-generating wallpaper

Researchers at Binghamton University (SUNY) in the United States have developed a specialized wallpaper capable of converting indoor humidity into electricity.

Led by Professor Seokheun ‘Sean’ Choi, the team integrated tiny moist-electric generators (MEGs) into the material. These devices absorb water molecules from the air, causing a movement of charged particles that creates a voltage difference.

In laboratory tests, a panel containing 1,596 printed generators produced approximately 3.5 volts at 38% humidity, which was sufficient to power a wireless keyboard in real time using a capacitor. The technology aims to harness the ambient moisture typically found in homes from activities such as breathing, cooking, or showering.
