Bingöl awarded geographical indication for burma kadayıf
The Turkish Patent and Trademark Office has officially granted a geographical indication certificate for ‘burma kadayıf’ to Bingöl, resolving a long-standing dispute between Bingöl and Diyarbakır regarding the dessert's origin.
Following an initiative by the Bingöl Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the product received registration number 1886. The traditional preparation involves turning dough into fine strands through a special machine, using butter, and incorporating Sivan mulberry molasses, a specialty of the Sivan region in Bingöl. The dessert is typically filled with pistachios or walnuts and served after being fried and soaked in syrup.
Local business owners expressed satisfaction with the decision, noting that the registration serves as a protection of Bingöl’s cultural heritage, labor, and traditions rather than just a brand trademark.
