Bio Fábrica de Corais uses regenerative tourism to restore Brazilian reefs

Bio Fábrica de Corais, a deep tech company, is utilizing regenerative tourism to fund the restoration of coral reefs along the Brazilian coast. The initiative aims to combat the collapse of these ecosystems, which support over 25% of marine biodiversity and recently faced a fourth wave of mass bleaching between 2023 and 2024.

Led by CEO and biological scientist Rudã Fernandes, the company cultivates approximately 12,000 corals from seven different species in marine nurseries. These corals are grown on 3D-printed supports tailored to their specific morphology to ensure they develop the skeletal structure necessary to withstand local hydrodynamic forces. Once they reach an appropriate biological state, the corals are transplanted into degraded areas.

The nurseries are located in the reefs of Porto de Galinhas and Tamandaré in Pernambuco, as well as Maragogi in Alagoas. The company also maintains laboratory facilities for research and the more delicate stages of coral development.
