Biobío Region industrial competitiveness threatened by diesel price hike

Rising diesel prices are creating economic concerns for Chile’s Biobío Region, where experts warn the increase could undermine industrial competitiveness. Local academics note that the region’s industrial profile makes it particularly vulnerable to higher fuel costs.

José Ignacio Hernández from the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC) stated that the impact is critical because much of the regional transport involves freight, including forestry, fishing, and cargo trains. These increased logistics costs may be passed on to consumers or reduce the competitiveness of regional exports.

Hugo Moraga from the Universidad de Concepción echoed these concerns, noting that the price hike will affect the entire local economy, specifically impacting forestry, manufacturing, and port companies that rely heavily on fuel for transporting raw materials and goods.
