Biobío Region pursues Odesur 2030 bid and WRC extension

The Biobío Region is pursuing a major sports and infrastructure push, led by Governor Sergio Giacaman. The regional government is bidding to host the 2030 Odesur Games, an opportunity that arose following the loss of another international host. The proposed plan includes constructing an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a multipurpose Arena for mass events, and an Olympic Village designed to later serve as permanent social housing.

Additionally, the region is looking to secure the World Rally Championship (WRC) through 2029. Following a successful recent event, Giacaman is seeking central government funding to reduce the regional financial burden. Local businesses in Concepción, particularly in the Plaza Perú gastronomic sector, have noted that major events like the Rally provide essential economic movement, helping to offset losses caused by local urban remodeling works.
