BioBTX to build world-first commercial plastic recycling plant in Netherlands
The European plastic recycling industry faces significant scaling challenges despite circular economy ambitions. Research from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre indicates that chemically recycled plastic currently cannot compete on cost with virgin plastics derived from fossil fuels. This economic hurdle is compounded by high investment costs and technical scaling difficulties. Data from Plastics Europe shows a sharp slowdown in the sector, with the annual growth of circular plastic production in Europe dropping from 13.6 percent in 2022 to just 1.2 percent in 2024.
In response to these industry-wide struggles, BioBTX is developing the world's first commercial installation to convert mixed plastic waste into high-quality aromatic chemicals using its Integrated Catalytic Cracking Process (ICCP) technology. Located at Chemiepark Delfzijl in the Netherlands, the facility is supported by strategic partner Covestro, which became a shareholder in 2024. The plant is expected to recycle 20,000 tons of waste annually, producing 10,000 tons of renewable aromatic oil and 8,000 tons of sustainable byproducts. This project aims to provide essential building blocks like benzene, toluene, and xylenes for the chemical industry while reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil-based production.
