Biochar from human waste may improve concrete and reduce emissions
Researchers are investigating the use of biochar derived from human waste as a way to improve concrete production and reduce environmental impact. Cement production is a major contributor to climate change, accounting for approximately 88 percent of the concrete industry’s greenhouse gas emissions and roughly 8 percent of total global emissions.
A new study suggests that incorporating between 5 and 10 percent of porous biochar made from human feces can lower these emissions while simultaneously enhancing the material's compression and bending strength. The biochar creates microscopic water reservoirs that facilitate the formation of stable calcium silicates during the process.
This research follows other attempts to find sustainable alternatives, such as using mollusk and coral shell attributes or spent coffee grounds to create more eco-friendly building materials.
