Biodiesel spill in Goiânia river triggers $2 million fine

A truck overturn on the GO‑403 highway near Goiânia caused a spill of about 56,000 liters of biodiesel into the Meia Ponte River, a key water source for the capital and surrounding municipalities. Municipal authorities, including the Defence Civil, the Municipal Environment Agency (Amma) and the Municipal Efficiency Secretariat (Sefic), acted quickly to contain the spill and prevent further environmental damage. The city of Goiânia fined transport company Primavera Diesel Ltda. 2 million reais and ordered immediate installation of containment barriers.

In a separate incident in Santos, São Paulo, a driver deliberately released more than 600 liters of raw glycerin after a dispute at a company site on the Anchieta Highway. No injuries were reported. The driver was taken to police custody, and the fire department performed preventive monitoring. Environmental agencies and the cleanup firm Ambipar were tasked with removing the glycerin and assessing any ecological impact. The municipal government will announce the exact fine amount in the coming days.
