Biogas sector emphasizes role in Poland's energy transition
The Green Gas Poland 2026 conference, which included the VIII Biogas and Biomethane Conference and BioPower Poland trade fairs, highlighted the strategic role of biogas in Poland's energy transition. Experts emphasized that biogas provides a stable, controllable, and dispatchable source of renewable energy.
Marek Duk of Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) noted that the flexibility and storage capabilities of biogas are vital. He suggested that biogas production should be adjusted to meet grid needs, such as pausing production during periods of high solar energy surplus. Discussions also covered the importance of legislative updates to energy law and connection procedures to facilitate industry growth.
While the sector is seen as a leader in the region, challenges remain, including high investment costs, the need for more biomethane and green hydrogen for industrial decarbonization, and the necessity for harmonized interpretations of regulations among different distribution system operators.
