BioLife receives US patent for oral peptide delivery technology

BioLife has been granted a US patent for its OralMatrix technology, an effervescent tablet platform designed for the oral delivery of peptide therapeutics. The technology aims to provide an alternative to injectable treatments for obesity and metabolic diseases, specifically targeting GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide, liraglutide, and exenatide.

The OralMatrix platform works by creating a temporary gastric buffering environment to protect peptide molecules from degradation as they pass through the gastrointestinal tract. In preclinical studies, the company reported measurable systemic exposure to semaglutide following oral administration, providing an in vivo proof of concept. However, these results are preclinical and have not yet established clinical efficacy or safety in humans.

The granted patent, which provides protection through 2042, addresses the significant market for obesity and metabolic medicines. The technology utilizes dissolvable effervescent tablets rather than relying on specialized coatings or absorption-enhancing excipients to facilitate absorption.
